Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 1 Verse 1-5
The Bhagavad Gita is considered to be the greatest spiritual book the world has ever known. In a very clear and wonderful way the Supreme Lord Krishna describes the science of self-realization and the exact process by which a human being can establish their eternal relationship with God. In terms of pure, spiritual knowledge the Bhagavad Gita is incomparable. Its intrinsic beauty is that its knowledge applies to all human beings and does not postulate any sectarian idealogy or secular view.
Today we are going to start a new journey through the chapters and verses of this book. I will do my best to provide exact meaning of each and every Sanskrit word and explain all the verses. These are merely not just the verses but the words of God which can lead you towards a beautiful life.
Before starting with Chapter 1, I will introduce you to a sandhi which is widely used here...and I think it's really better to tell you about it first than writing it's meaning in each and every verse meaning.
: + च = श्च
This is mostly used and that च actually means "and"
Well, then let's start
अध्याय १ श्लोक १
(Chapter 1 Verse 1)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच :
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सव: |
मामका: पांडवा‌‌श्र्चैव किमकुर्वत संजय ||१||
शब्दार्थ:
समवेता = एकत्रित
युयुत्सव = युध्द करण्यासाठी उत्सुक
मामका: = माझे
पांडवा‌‌श्र्चैव = पांडू पुत्र
किमकुर्वत = काय करतायत
श्र्लोकार्थ : धृतराष्ट्र म्हणाला, हे संजय! कुरूक्षेत्राच्या पवित्र धर्मक्षेत्रावर एकत्रित आलेल्या युध्दाची अपक्षा करणाऱ्या माझ्या आणि पांडूच्या पुत्राने काय केल ?
अध्याय १ श्लोक २
Chapter 1 Verse 2
संजय उचाव :
दृष्ट्वा तु पांडवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा |
आचार्यमुपसंगम्य राजा वचनमव्रवीत् ||२||
शब्दार्थ:
दृष्ट्वा = दृष्टी
तु = तो
पांडवानीकं(पांडव+अनीकं)= पांडवांचे सैनिक , अनीकं म्हणजे सैन्य
व्यूढं = योजना / तयारी
दुर्योधनस्तदा( दुर्योधनः+तदा )= तदा म्हणजे तेव्हा(or “तब” in Hindi) दुर्योधनस्तदा म्हणजे दुर्योधन तेव्हा….
आचार्यमुपसंगम्य(आचार्यम्+उपसंगम्य) = आचार्यकडे(द्रोणाचार्याकडे) जाऊन
राजा = (येथे) दुर्योधन
वचनमव्रवीत् = बोलण्यास आरंभ केला
श्र्लोकार्थ: संजय म्हणाला हे राजा! पांडुपुत्रांनी सैनिकांची केलेली व्युहरचना पाहुन दुर्योधन आचार्य द्रोणाचार्याकडे गेला व त्यांने बोलण्यास आरंभ केला.
अध्याय १ श्लोक ३
Chapter 1 Verse 3
पश्यैतां पांडुपुत्राणामाचार्य महतीं चमूम् |
व्यूढां द्रुपदपुत्रेण तव शिष्येण धीमता ||३||
शब्दार्थ :
पश्यैतां(पश्य+एतां)= पश्य म्हणजे बघा and एतां म्हणजे हे(or “this”)
पांडुपुत्राणामाचार्य(पांडुपुत्राणाम्+आचार्य)= पांडुपुत्राणाम् म्हणजे पांडुचे पुत्र … (According to previous shloka) दुर्योधन हे आचार्यांना सांगतो
महतीं = महान
चमूम् = सैन्य
व्यूढां = योजना / तयारी
द्रुपदपुत्रेण = दृपदपुत्र धृष्टधुम्न याने
तव = तुमच्या
शिष्येण = शिष्य
धीमता = बुध्दीमान
श्र्लोकार्थ: अहो आचार्य ! तुमचा बुध्दीमान शिष्य, दृपदपुत्र धृष्टधुम्न याने चातुर्याने रचलेली ही विशाल पांडवसेना पहा.
अध्याय १ श्लोक ४
Chapter 1 Verse 4
अत्र शूरा महेष्वासा भीमार्जुनसमा युधि |
युयुधानो विराटश्र्च द्रुपदश्र्च महारथ: ||४||
शब्दार्थ :
अत्र = इथे
शूरा = शूर- वीर
महेष्वासा = महान धनुर्धर
भीमार्जुनसमा = भीम आणि अर्जुन सारखे
युधि = युध्द करणारे
युयुधानो = सात्यकि
विराटश्र्च = विराट
द्रुपदश्र्च = दृपद
महारथ = सर्वक्षेष्ठ योध्दे
श्र्लोकार्थ: येथे(या युध्दभुमीवर ) भीम आणि अर्जुन यांच्यासारखे शुर आणि महान धनुर्धर आहेत. तसेच युयुधान(सात्यकि), विराट आणि दृपद यांच्यासारखे सर्वक्षेष्ठ योद्धेसुध्दा आहेत.
अध्याय १ श्लोक ५
Chapter 1 Verse 5
धृष्टकेतुश्चेकितान: काशिराजश्च वीर्यवान् I
पुरुजित्कुंतिभोजश्च शौब्यश्च नरपुंगाव: ॥५॥
शब्दार्थ :
धृष्टकेतुश्चेकितान( धृष्टकेतु + च + चेकितानः) = धृष्टकेतु आणि चेकिता
काशिराजश्च = काशीराज
वीर्यवान् = बलवान
पुरुजित्कुंतिभोजश्च(पुरुजित् + कुन्तिभोज: ) = पुरुजित आणि कुंतिभोज
शौब्यश्च = शैब्य
नरपुंगाव = मनुष्यमध्ये श्रेष्ठ
श्लोकार्थ: येथे शुर आणि बलवान असे धृष्टकेतु, चेकितान , काशीराज, पुरूजित, कुंतिभोज आणि शैब्य यांच्यासारखे महान योद्धे आहेत .
